With piksel04 coming up, Adam Hyde gave a workshop at BEK that covered an introduction into setting up a streaming server to stream audio and/or video using the linux platform.
The first day he started with giving a brief introduction into streaming media, and his own projects involving streaming of audio and video on the linux platform like Radio Qualia and some projects adam develloped together with the dutch internet service provider XS4ALL.
After his introduction we focussed the discussion on linux distrubutions, meaning which linux distrobutions are there to choose from, how do you set them up etc.
The second day we started with setting up some streams with Icecast. Icecast is an open source streaming server which you can install on both windows and linux and is well supported. Besides installing streaming software we also looked into what kind of mediaplayers play what kind of streams and how you should inform your listeners about which players to use and/or how to install them.
The third day adam showed us some solutions for using windows or macintosch to stream. Since not everyone is able to setup a linx server themselves, sometimes you depend on a friends server or your internet service provider or, with osx installed, you can also use mac as a server to stream from.
I tried to install the free darwin streaming server package which worked very well under osx.
Adams workshop was defenately a nice beginning of Piksel04. |
