CREATE USB Interface

Artist name:

Dan Overholt and Anne-Marie Skriver Hansen

URL:

Statement:

Here's a description of the open source CREATE USB Interface (CUI) hardware:

http://www.create.ucsb.edu/~dano/CUI/ICMC2006.pdf

The CUI was developed as part of the Media Arts and Technology curriculum at U.C. Santa Barbara (the course webpage is here):

http://www.create.ucsb.edu/~dano/594O/

Many works have been developed with the CUI hardware, hundreds of people use the design throughout the world now. It is similar in approach to the Arduino open source hardware, but is capable of doing true USB HID (Human Interface Device) transfers... One recent project (also open source) is the Multimodal Music Stand, as seen here on

Instructables:

http://www.instructables.com/id/ENR2O85F2FRVKRH/

Anne-Marie has made the "Vacuole Robes" project using the CUI as seen here:

http://platformart.net/am/ - please click on the second red dot in the row of dots;)

The Vacuole Robes are two wireless wearables that require physical strength to activate sound. People zip themselves into the robes, that cover their entire body. By stretching out arms and legs, and by bending backwards, forwards and to the sides two people contribute to the sound in the space. The sound reacts to sudden, slow and repeated movements. The robes are humorous and absurd devices that challenge the idea of a non-verbal language generated with movement.

Software:

Pd/GEM, SuperCollider, ChucK?, Embedded C
