chdh

Artist name: Cyrille Henry Nicolas Montgermont Category: Audiovisual performance URL: http://www.chdh.net Statement: chdh's proposal is a live performance based on audiovisual virtual instruments. The system is based on about 30 instruments made of generative, stochastic or physical modeling algorithms that each creates visualizations and sounds in real time. Two musicians, connected by an OSC link, interact on the same interface using MIDI motorized controllers. It allows each instrument to be played by one or both musician at the same time. They manipulate instruments using an abstract layer which modify the algorithm parameters. Each algorithm output data used for the audio and video creation, giving a strong cohesion between medias. Both audio and video are minimalist : sinus, dirac, white noise, pink noise interact with cube, sphere and other 3d shapes in a black and white visual environment. The performance is divided in two parts, the first main part defines and explores each instrument in a solo / accompanied way. The musician uses his experience of the instrument to express his feelings as the public discovers and interprets the intrinsic links between sounds and videos. The second part is using all patch in an polyrythmic combination, playing on the visual and audio spaces taken by each instrument. Means: chdh work is based on two laptops linked by an Ethernet link, which is supporting OSC data. Each musician interact on the same open source software : Pure Data. Pure Data is the main source of inspiration and exploration as chdh members are involved in pd development of two physical modeling librairies, used in the performance : pmpd and msd. The visual is supported by the GEM openGL environment and other externals are used, specially the zexy and OSC collections. History: chdh was created in 2000 by Cyrille Henry and Damien Henry. The aim was improvisation on laptop music and analog synthesis. The project was then oriented on an interactive performance, a juggler was equipped with physical sensors that allowed a musician to create sound evolving with movements. After an auto-produced album of live electronic music in 2002, chdh recentered his work around the links between sound and picture with the usage of the PD software combined with the GEM library. Since 2003, the chdh performance has been played in various places, notably in the the noumatrouff, IRCAM or La gaité lyrique (paris). In 2004, the group stayed in residence at Confluences, a cultural center in Paris, which has leaded to the creation of an audiovisual installation : the Cinéradian. In 2005, Nicolas Montgermont replaces Damien Henry for the live project. "chdh logo":img:http://www.basseslumieres.org/Images/chdhpiksel.JPG
