Alex Norman is a musician and programmer of free-libre open source software. He has worked on several creative software tools, largely in the audio and music domain. His specialty is multimedia and micro-controller programing. He is dedicated to the free-libre open source model because he is believes that one should share one's knowledge, skills and work to create dynamic, creative communities.
In addition to working on his own projects Alex has contributed to several other free software projects including: fluxus (adding active and red/green stereo modes) pure data's GEM (adding active stereo) supercollider (creating a vim based editor [scvim]?) music on the console (adding jack-audio output and other features) ats (creating pure data and csound unit generators)
Alex is a recent graduate of the University of California at Santa Barbara's Media Arts and Technology program, where he received a Masters of Science in Multimedia Engineering. There he developed several new creative software tools, including Data Jockey, a meta-data enhanced digital DJ tool. He assisted teaching software and hardware courses and, in collaboration with artist and programmer August Black, taught a Pure Data workshop and gave a presentation about free software and the Arts.
He is currently living in Portland, Oregon, USA where he continues to develop free software, collaborate with other artists and musicians, and cultivate his own artistic work.
