Jeff Carey's musical activities range in practice from computer based composition of acousmatic multi-channel computer music to electronic musicianship in a variety of performance and improvisation units. Studied in Audio Technology at American University in washington DC and at the Instituut Voor Sonologie at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag, he plays in a number of performance units such as the electro-acoustic improvisation sextet Office-R(6), the computer music duo SKIF, and in the electro-acoustic duo USA/USB and has written electronic music for live dance and for dance media (dvd). His music has been featured in festivals such as Transmediale (DE), Yule (NL), Borealis (NO), Earational (NL), and NuMusic? (NO), and has had residencies at organizations such as Harvestworks (USA), and USF (NO). Despite the obviously performative aspect of much of his activity, his work strives to incorporate aspects of Algorithmic Composition both at material and structural levels of musical composition, and perhaps in an apparent contradiction, seeks to find ways to incorporate the study of purely non realtime computer composition procedures into real-time performance practice. As a founding member of the pan-european N-Collective which focusses on the integration of new music, electronic music, and improvisation, he works to promote the music of the collective and participates in the self organization of N Events. He teaches the computer music and synthesis programing language SuperCollider 3, most recently at the institutions BEK, TEKS, and NOTAM in Norway.
