Generic Graphical Library, GEGL, is scheduled to be the next generation
infrastructure for the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP). The existing
legacy infrastructure of GIMP was deemed not good enough already in 2000 by the
people who made the hollywood branch, the branch that eventually turned into
the Cinepaint fork. Their cure for GIMPs weaknesses was a brand new processing
core called GEGL.

After years of slumbering GEGL started building strength last summer and is now
resurfacing. Through the use of babl for pixel format agnosticism, and
reference implementations coded with floating point arithmetic, GEGL aims beyond
the currently desired needs of GIMP and might even prove useful for more
scientific use. GUI experiments and explorations of possible new open
hierarchically structured file formats for raster data exchange are other
topics closely related to current GEGL developments.
