FIXEDto the solved ones.
There were some fixes on the live CD for LiVES. Most important one is that when started from a desktop icon, LiVES MUST be started in a terminal (although you can set its size to 0x0 so that the terminal window does not actually appear). This is due to the way LiVES handles signal, and is only an issue when starting directly from the desktop via an icon. Failure to do so can cause your X window session to restart when a "cancel" signal is given in LiVES. I attach the LiVES.desktop file for your convenience.
The other issue I recall was that many of the encoder plugins were not installed, they should all be present in /usr/share/lives/plugins/encoders or equivalent, and each one should be tested by going to Tools/Preferences/Encoding, and selecting each encoder plugin in turn from the drop-down. You will see an error box if any of the required components are missing.
You may also want to update to the latest version of LiVES. There are now debian packages of this available by adding the following to /etc/sources:
deb http://people.ubuntubrasil.org/~rclbelem/lives/etch/ binary/ deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ etch main
Instructions for other distros, and full release notes can always be found at http://lives.sourceforge.net/index.php?do=downloads
Kind regards, Gabriel.

Pakt update -- Thu, 20 Apr 2006 14:38:30 +0200 reply
pakt-0.4/warsaw-0.1 (iterative.org/...) now require gstreamer-0.10. if done "properly", gstreamer will include as many plugins as possible (or as makes sense with the cd environment). some sample startup lines would be nice, too.
add Effectv to Piksel menu --gif, Thu, 20 Apr 2006 15:20:11 +0200 reply
xterm -e effectv as startup command to preserve the console help text.
It needs a mounted camera to work and automatically tries to use /dev/video0 at startup.
