Hi,

I promised to compile a linklist of all the relevant programs that I mentioned, that can be useful for Open Video Editing.

Xvidcap is an easy to use screen-capture program, that is useful to create movies of software application for tutorial and demo purposes. Available from most distributions, or from its homepage: http://xvidcap.sourceforge.net/

dvgrab is a simple commandline command for grabbing video from a DV Camcorder using Firewire.

convert: This program is a simple commandline tool, that supports a large range of image file formats, even PDF, which is useful for getting presentation slides into a video project, by converting them to the JPEG or PNG format, and then importing those into the editing program. The „convert“ program is available as part of the image-magick tools. http://www.imagemagick.org/

„Open Movie Editor“ is my own little video editing program, it is easy to use, but yet powerful. It is available from http://www.openmovieeditor.org/ . For support, there is a forum available at http://www.openmovieeditor.org/board/ . For an easy introduction, a comprehensive Tutorial can be found at: http://propirate.net/repos/openme-developers/doc/tutorial.html

Video Filters for Open Movie Editor are available from the frei0r plugin collection, which can be downloaded from http://freshmeat.net/projects/frei0r .

For publishing video in different formats, ffmpeg might be a useful tool, it is available from http://ffmpeg.mplayerhq.hu/ .

Publishing Video on the internet can be either done on one of the many available free, commercial video sharing sites, or you could host it on your own internet server, by converting the video to the .flv format, which means „flash video“. Using the flash-player from http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=JW_FLV_Player , video can be provided to most Internet users, because the Flash Plugin is fairly widespread, even if it is not free as in Freedom.

For DVD creation, there are two nice tools, DVDStyler?, from http://dvdstyler.sf.net/ , and ManDVD? from http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=38347 . They are both easy to use, but I think that ManDVD?, is nicer, this of course is a matter of preference, so try both.

Installing some of those Tools mentioned above can be tricky, but for some Distributions there are Repositories available that can be helpful. If you are running Debian GNU/Linux, try http://www.debian-multimedia.org/ . If you are running OpenSUSE? Linux, you might want to use http://packman.links2linux.org/ . It is a very useful repository, and generally it also has the most recent version of Open Movie Editor and the frei0r plugins available. Ubuntu Linux has most of the important stuff already in its „Multiverse“ Repositories.
