Bio:
elpueblodechina a.k.a. Alejandra Perez Nunez is a sound artist and media designer working with FLOSS software, electronics and critical writting. Together with Yves Degoyon and euromovements she develops interfaces for browsing digital libraries using semantic analysis of unstructured databases with texts produced during european social forums.
As a sound artist she is currently working with radio transmitters, radio performance and the recycling of content from internet radios. With Yves Degoyon they have worked on Medios Libres in Chile where they made workshops and set up the internet radio for Valparaiso FM radio La radioneta (http://laradioneta.cl).
She has worked in mapping and the activation of social networks with Barcelona based groups redactiva (http://www.redactiva.org) and for the online archives of Universite Tangente in Paris (http://www.u-tangente.org).
Yves Degoyon a.k.a. d.R.e.G.S. is an open-source developer working on collaborative tools for social networks, a set of interconnected tools connecting media, live activities of the multitude to visible representation on the web. After developing some free software package for the processing of media ( sound, video, RSS, IRC channels live inputs, ... ) within the frame of Pure Data ( http://pure-data.iem.at/ ), he worked on the practical use of these tools to help the emergence of free media platforms like GISS ( Global Internet Streaming Support ) ( http://www.r23.cc ), which now broadcast more than 15 free permanent radios or temporary video streams set up for special events ( World Social Forum, Porto Alegre, 2005, Forum International de Software Libre, Porto Alegre, 2005, European Social Forum, Athens, 2006, ... ).
He also developped some tools for collaborative cartography, taking into account not only real-time mapping but some chronological mapping of events, effective tools for a historical perspective and a collective memory. The kind of maps made with this tool Map-O-Matix ( http://mapomatix.sf.net ) are aimed to show historical processes like the repression of african immigration in Europe or the actions of students in Chile ( in collaboration with Alejandra Perez Nunez).
He is now working on visualisations of organisational and human networks, connected with the databases collected in social gatherings like the Social Forums, showing interconnections betweens groups and organisations involved into the social transformation processes ( http://etc-groups.sourceforge.net ).
Statement:
What is the sound of geopolitical space? Could our instruments become resonant to the movements of economical interests and to migrations of ideas and people?
Transducer is a device, usually electrical, electronic, or electro-mechanical, that converts one type of energy to another for the purpose of measurement or information transfer. Most transducers are either sensors or actuators. In a broader sense, a transducer is sometimes defined as any device that senses or converts a signal from one form to another.
In this sound performance we will work with radio transmitters, radio receivers, cristal radios, piezzo electric microphones, hydrophones and a wikipedia chatbot in order to transduce layers of information, making them audible and expressive. It is an operation in between two practices, that of speculation and DIY technology. We will bend the results coming from our hybrid machines, making use of software and combinations of information specially focusing on the energy problem that triggers current conflicts in the middle east. We will build combinations of radio circuits and sound instruments following open source hardware schematics. We mean to realize an operation of transduction, trying to think of a domain using the means of another.
In semiotics, transduction is the translation from a sign or concept from one field of knowledge to a different one. It differs from "traduction" with regard to its deepest necessity of adaptation.
